Communication - Friendly Spaces

Attending the amazing Elizabeth Jarman Communication-Friendly Spaces (CFS) training has inspired us at Bertie’s to reflect even more deeply on the learning environment that we provide for the children. This approach is based on a wide range of respected and influential research and fully promotes all three aspects of Communication and Language.
Since adopting this approach we have:
Created a ‘softer’ book/quiet area that reflects a more homely atmosphere with cushions, fleecy blankets, plants etc

Made sure that the children’s senses are not overwhelmed with clutter, clashing colours and masses of displays everywhere - this has created an atmosphere where children can develop better levels of concentration and know where to focus their attention

Considered our choice of colours for our furnishings/surroundings so that they are more neutral and calming (except in the art/messy play area)…did you know that the colour red can raise blood pressure and make you feel more agitated whilst blue feels tranquil, cool and serene?

Considered noise levels at certain times so that children have an environment where they can listen and be heard

Provided a range of spaces inside and out where children can think, read, listen, watch, chat, rest or just ‘be’
